17th Century Carved Oak Wainscot Armchair W658
From the Age of Oak, a very good example of the classic Wainscot Armchair. The panelled back and elaborate cresting rail is decorated with beautiful crisp carving, the mid panel having a large version of a "Saltaire" or St Andrews Cross.
The back is also framed by an inlaid line of light-dark parquetry, probably holly and bog oak or ebony.
The tenoned and pegged construction has stood the test of time, as the chair is in very good condition with minor repairs (see photo of the seat corner detail). The seat is an old replacement, possibly 19th or 20th century, done sympathetically and in keeping with the chair. The old velvet seat cushion pairs well with the excellent antique patina and colour of the oak. Circa 1640
