19th Century Mahogany Cotton Reel Stand. S191

The early 19th century saw the arrival of the modern style cotton reel, and stands to hold them. This mahogany stand is made of dense cuban mahogany, and the quality has ensured its survival in excellent condition. Set on a central decoratively turned column are 3 circular tiers, the upper 2 revolving on the stem. They are held rigid by the spindles (originally there were 6 spindles, now only 3 remain). The stand is surmounted by a cup, probably filled with a pincushion originally. Circa 1850.
