17th Century Oak Box Settle

Panelled and carved, this box settle is a fine example of the oak tradition in British furniture. The boarded and pegged construction has survived the test of time, for the settle is in original condition (with a possible hinge replacement). The carved s-scroll panels at the top are well executed. The hinged seat encloses storage space. The back is sloped for comfort. With an undisturbed surface, it has the dark warmth that good 17th oak attains. Circa 1680.
Width 184cm (72 1/2 inches)
Height 117cm (46 inches)
Depth including the rake of the back 61cm (24 inches)
