18th Century Coiled Steel and Wood Candle Holder

A single candle holder dating from the early 18th century. This early form of lighting consisted of a coiled steel spiral, containing a metal socket that held the candle. The socket allowed the candle height to be adjusted as the candle burned down. The metal spiral is set into a circular mound-shaped wooden base, possibly fruitwood or alder. The condition is very good for an item of this age. It is English made.
Height 19cm (7 1/2 inches) Base diameter 9cm (3 1/2 inches)
